Whether one prefers to lay on the beach, sit around a fire, hike, ski, mountain bike or something in between, there is always something to suit every need (and preference). But for those who spend the majority of their time in the great outdoors, there are a multitude of applications available for just about any smartphone. But what about the phone itself? Many mobile phones do not often lend themselves to being used on a trail; thankfully, someone has thought of the outdoor enthusiast and created some amazing options in the realm of smartphones.
1. CAT S60.
Making the top of the list is one of the most advanced rugged smartphones on the market. This model is a waterproof option complete with a thermal imaging camera. It is also the first smartphone to feature such a camera. And, it should also be noted, that this phone is not only suited for the outdoors, the technology by FLIR has a whole host of applications for work and home including finding gaps in insulation, electrical faults, and monitoring the performance of machinery. Some other benefits of this smartphone is the underwater camera, battery life, and storage. However, it can be a little costly.
2. CAT S40.
Yet another Caterpillar model making it’s way to the top of the list. This model boasts best OVERALL rugged smartphone and also contains the same rugged build one would see in any piece of CAT construction machinery. The CAT S40 can withstand 6-foot drops, submersion in water up to 1 meter for at least 60 minutes, and is also dustproof. Additionally, the screen can be operated while the user is wearing gloves, something that would prove to be useful on a cooler spring or fall adventure, or a winter escapade. The one downside to this model is the low-resolution display, so for those going for a high definition look, the S60 may prove to be a better option.
3. Kyocera DuraForce E6560.
Yet another amazing model which has been voted “Best Rugged Smartphone.” This model has recently been made available for those looking for an unlocked smartphone, rather than needing to purchase via a particular cellular provider. As for the phone itself, it boasts a 4 1/2 inch IPS screen with 720×1280 High Definition resolution. The phone is also able to withstand submersion in water for up to 30 minutes at a time, the touchscreen can be operated with gloves on or when wet, and iscertified for protection against shock, vibration, extreme temperatures, blowing rain, salt fog, dust, and water. However, it should be taken under advisement that this model may not be the “next best thing” from this company, so if one can hold out for the next version, that may be a way to go.
